Since the death of the legendary Camarón de la Isla, Tomatito has become the most respected soloist in the world of flamenco guitar. Tomatito is possessed of extraordinarily flamboyant charisma, and his tireless commitment to the development and popularization of flamenco all over the world, has earned him recognition not only in musical circles, but also in the worlds of cinema, theatre and art.
The album Aguadulce (Verve) is a reflection of Tomatito’s intention to return to his roots. The album, which bears the name of the city in which he lives, was received by both critics and the public as one of the best flamenco recordings of the year. For this concert, Tomatito has surrounded himself with a group of musicians carefully selected for their way of experiencing and of living the spirit of gypsy music.
José Fernández Torres, Tomatito, was born into a world full of flamenco guitars. He began his musical career at twelve, performing in tablaos like the Taberna Gitana, where he had the honour of performing for such flamenco greats as Paco de Lucia. During this period he met Camarón de la Isla, who he was to accompany for the last eighteen years of his life. With Camarón he recorded many albums, and as a duo they played not only in all the most important flamenco festivals and recitals in Spain, but also in cities known world-wide for their musical traditions such as Montreux and New York.
After the death of Camerón, Tomatito began a meteoric rise to success as a concert guitarist. Since then he has performed with his group to great acclaim in the most prestigious temples of music.
